rock and a hard place, Upfront Issue #99 November 1st, 2006
Dresden Sky is a blossoming Folk "Rock" Band in Windsor. Their name invokes allied warplanes, and plummeting fire bombs from the heavens over the German city.

Twenty -six year-old vocalist Erin Gignac explains, "People tell me about how their grandfathers' fought in Dresden during the Second World War; it sounds so deep and personal; but it's more simple than that. I'm talking about Dresden Ontario. I've always liked the way the name sounds... Even for a person". If you've never heard her, Erin's voice can be described as birdlike. Light, and on the middle high end, think Joni Mitchell, or Sarah McLachlan. What am I the make of this grrl who grew up in Emeryville whose mom and pop moved to Belle River, and sent her to St Anne's High, before she shipped off in order the study "classical" piano, guitar, mandolin, trumpet and song writing?

Researching female artists that "rock" in Windsor is a taxing thing. "Rock" is an ambiguous way to describe so much shit. Is it a verb? A noun? An adjective describing musicians? The term "rock", as in, "You rock!" has reached it's apex and is on it's way out of modern vernacular in this city. It's cooler not to "rock" today. I mean, with the popularity of nonsense karaoke television shows like Canadian Idol or "Rock" star Supernova, it's easy to see... That shit ain't "rock" yo. I mean it sounds like rock, and it looks like "rock" (fashion), but the message is coming from (the top) industry and is being forced (down) upon us with media bombardment. It's a fucking game show, and doesn't deserve the ink it gets; unless it's a published punch in the noise like this. "Rock", real "rock" happens from the bottom up, it's organic. Artists cash in when their principles and talent can no longer be ignored, it's often late in like that they're plucked like a ripened tomato off the vine.

Erin: "Rock" to me is good song writing, performance, and a good build-up in a song. Then there's a part that "rocks out", takin' it to the bridge... Solos... "Rockin" just means that something's good. Honestly, I don't even use that expression. I don't. I'll say, "that's great", or "that was amazing", if I hear something that catches my ear. The songs I'm writing now don't even have a bridge.

Dresden Sky is a growing band, their line up is ever changing and is still unrefined (it's better for your digestive tract that way). They've been known as a two-piece (with Marc Bertrand) for the last three years or so; but the tunes they are a changin' thanks to drummer Brandon Sylvestre, and bassist Duncan Booth. Both joined in on the recording of Dresden Sky's EP.
